Maureen loved playing rough athletic games in her youth and excelled in sports. Her passion for sports was matched by an equally natural gift for being a performer. As evidenced by receiving nearly every Feis award in drama or theatrical performing her country offered. In her teens she was accepted to the Abbey Theater, where her enthusiasm for classical theatre and operatic music was continued. Charles Laughton was mesmerized after taking an Maureen screen test. He was fascinated by the stunning eyes of Maureen. Before casting her to star in Jamaica Inn (1939), Laughton together with his friend, Erich Pommer, changed her name from Maureen FitzSimons to "Maureen O'Hara" - - a less slender name to be used for the marquee. Maureen FitzSimons' upcoming film (The Hunchback of Notre Dame 1939) was to be filmed in the studio of RKO Pictures in America under agreement with Laughton. The film's epic nature was a massive hit and Maureen's contract was eventually taken over outright from Laughton from RKO. In the year 19 Maureen was already in two major motion pictures together with Laughton.
